Hemp-derived CBD skincare products are everywhere! Why? They are easy to incorporate into your daily routine and provide a variety of benefits. In 2018, the global CBD skin care market size was valued at $234.1 million (USD), and estimated to be worth $1.7 billion (USD) by 2025!
While studies are being conducted globally about the impact of CBD, science has revealed the following benefits of CBD on skin:
A 2014 study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD did, in fact, “help normalize a pro-acne agent” and “inhibit the unwanted growth of sebocytes.” In more common language, it helps your skin keep calm and even-toned.
CBD is commonly known as an anti-inflammatory agent, and many skincare issues are rooted in inflammation – such as ‘over skin’ dermatitis and ‘under skin’ arthritis. Research featured in Nature Reviews Immunology suggests that applying sufficiently bioavailable amounts of transdermal CBD can help with inflammation that we can’t see.
Topical creams and scrubs are often used to help regenerate skin that is healing from a significant wound – whether surgical or by accident. A 2019 study in La Clinica Teraputica found that patients with inflammatory scarring saw significant improvement of symptoms when a CBD ointment was applied to their skin.
As we age and lose collagen our skin loses its elasticity. Finding effective skincare products that help to increase the elasticity of aging skin has become the ‘holy grail’ of anti-aging skincare products. The La Clinica Teraputica study that found information about scarring, also found increased elasticity in the skin of subjects who used a topical CBD treatment. However, more studies are needed to clearly link the elasticity directly to the CBD itself or if the results are due to other ingredients in the ointment, in combination with the CBD.
With all the new CBD products on the market, transparency will be the key. Knowing the quality of the CBD and where it is sourced will prove important in the effectiveness of any CBD skincare product.
